Founded in 2003, Chengyi College, Jimei University is an independent college approved by the Ministry of Education. It is jointly run by Jimei University, a key university in Fujian Province and the Education Development Foundation of Fujian Jimei University.
The College is located in Jimei, Xiamen, Fujian Province, the hometown of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a famous overseas Chinese leader. It persists in the socialist school running direction, upholds the spirit of Tan Kah Kee, adheres to the “Sincerity and Perseverance” school motto, cultivates application-oriented talents with solid foundation, extensive knowledge, special skills, innovative spirit, practical ability and social responsibility. To serve the economic and social development, it endeavors to build an application-oriented university with distinctive school running characteristics, excellent school running conditions, high teaching quality and good social reputation.
Taking full-time undergraduate education as the main body, with nearly 15,000 students, the College has set up 11 schools covering 37 undergraduate majors in eight disciplines: engineering, management, economics, literature, law, science, pedagogy and arts. Incorporating students into the National Enrollment Plan, it enrolls students from 29 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) throughout the country. Students who have completed all the courses prescribed by the teaching plan, obtained the required credits and met the graduation requirements will be awarded the graduation certificate of Chengyi College, Jimei University, which is recognized by the Ministry of Education and electronically registered; Those who meet the requirements for bachelor’s degree will be granted corresponding bachelor’s degree by Chengyi College, Jimei University.
The College adheres to the teaching faculty construction concept of “controlling the total number, upgrading the level and optimizing the structure”, forming a high-quality full-time teaching faculty mainly composed of its own teachers and teachers selected from Jimei University, supplemented by external teachers. Presently the College has nearly 800 full-time teachers, among its own teachers, 47% are teachers with senior professional titles, 91.3% are teachers with master’s degree or above, and 61% are teachers with dual qualifications and dual abilities. Among the faculty members, there are one teacher who enjoys the Special Allowance of the State Council, one National Advanced Individual of Teacher Ethics, one provincial Master Teacher, four provincial Excellent Teachers, one provincial Leading Talent in Philosophy and Social Sciences, two provincial New Century Excellent Talents Support Program for Colleges and Universities, and four provincial Outstanding Young Scientific Research Talents Cultivation Program for Colleges and Universities.
Adhering to the principle of “taking undergraduate education as the foundation”, the College aims at building application-oriented undergraduate programs and cultivating high-quality application-oriented talents in the new era, and constantly deepens education and teaching reforms. Combining with the regional industrial structure, the College further highlights its characteristic of application-oriented talent cultivation in establishing six major clusters: Internet+, electronic information, intelligent manufacturing, modern shipping, cultural industry and Free Trade Zone business. Presently, the College has three provincial teaching teams, one model application-oriented professional group and four first-class undergraduate major construction sites, three unique majors, three unique majors in the service industry, six innovative entrepreneurship education reform pilot projects, four comprehensive reform of majors pilot projects of colleges and universities that run undergraduate programs, three talent cultivation model innovation experimental zone, six excellent courses, seven excellent resource sharing courses, three online and offline hybrid courses, three offline first-class undergraduate courses, one first-class social practice course, one excellent unique undergraduate textbook, three off-campus practice education bases for university students, two new engineering research and reform practice projects, etc. It was awarded the “2018 Smart Teaching Pilot Project” by the Online Education Research Center of the Ministry of Education. It has won nearly 900 awards in the National University Student Challenge Cup, Mathematical Modeling, robotics, electronic design, intelligent car, e-commerce “Three Innovations”and other competitions of different levels in various disciplines. With the continuous improvement of education quality, the social influence of the College is also increasing. The College ranks 8th in the China Independent College Rankings of 2021-2022 by China Science and Education Evaluation Network; Ranked 12th in the Wushulian Ranking of Comprehensive Strength of Independent Colleges in 2020 (in which freshman quality ranked 25th); In the Evaluation Results and Ranking List of 2015-2019 National Discipline Competition of Ordinary Colleges and Universities, it ranked top 200 in the List of National Ordinary Colleges and Universities, second in the List of Private and Independent Colleges for two consecutive years, and sixth in the List of National Newly Established Undergraduate Colleges and Universities.
Relying on teamwork, the College actively promotes the integration of production, study and research with the building of scientific research platforms through multiple channels and measures. At present, there are more than 400 scientific research projects of all levels established, and quite a number of international and domestic academic conferences have been held. The Manuscript Review Center of the journal of International Fuzzy Mathematics (the only one in Asia), Chen Shuili Model Worker Innovation Studio in Xiamen city, Jimei University Institute of Urban and Regional Development and other scientific research platforms have been set up in the College.
The College has carried out in-depth university-enterprise cooperation and external exchange and cooperation, and constructed a multi-dimensional and pluralistic open education model. It has carried out in-depth university-enterprise cooperation with large and medium-sized enterprises such as Chinasoft International, built secondary colleges, talent cultivating practice bases and laboratories, set up scholarships and grants, to jointly cultivate application-oriented talents, and promote the“seamless connection”between teaching and manufacturing, and between professional chain and industrial chain. Currently, there are one comprehensive reform project of industry-university cooperation major established by the Ministry of Education, seven projects of industry-university cooperation in talent cultivation of the Ministry of Education, nine projects of “enterprise-supported industry-university cooperation in talent cultivation”of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education. It has jointly built student employment and internship bases with more than 200 enterprises and institutions. It also has strengthened inter-school exchanges and cooperation with more than ten universities outside the Chinese mainland, including those in the UK, the US and Taiwan, and carried out mini study abroad and short-term study programs.
The College strives to create an excellent learning environment for the growth and development of students. The campus covers an area of more than 36 hectares with distinctive architectural features. In 2009, the College campus and the new campus of Jimei University were awarded the “One Hundred Classic and Excellent Projects of the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of New China”. The College also has advanced and complete teaching, experiment facilities, high standard laboratories, swimming pool, gymnasium, cinema, library, piano room, etc. Two facilities have won the first among national colleges and universities: the first to have a 360 degree view navigation ship handling simulator, and the first to have an intelligent library that adopts radio frequency identification (RFID) management system in library collection.
The educational philosophy of “establishing the school with the spirit of Tan Kah Kee and cultivating talents with the personality of sincerity and perseverance” has become the spiritual source that inspires generations of Chengyi faculty and students to conduct rigorous research and behave with integrity, as well as the inexhaustible power to push the College to continuously explore and innovate into an application-oriented university. With the deepening of educational reform and innovation, the blueprint of higher education in the new era is gradually unfolding. When the wind is good, it is time to set sail.
